About this Paper: Fake news has become a pervasive issue in the modern era, and Bangladesh is no exception to this global phenomenon. With the rapid proliferation of digital platforms and social media, fake news and misleading narratives can spread rapidly, leading to social unrest, misinformation-driven decisions, and erosion of public trust. In Bangladesh, where a significant portion of the population relies on social media and online news for information, the impact of fake news is particularly problematic. However, recognizing the detrimental effects of fake news, the government, civil society organizations, and media outlets have been actively working to combat this issue and promote media literacy and responsible journalism. The advent of technology and the internet has revolutionized the way news is disseminated and consumed. While this progress has brought numerous benefits, it has also given rise to the spread of misinformation, propaganda, and fake news. In Bangladesh, fake news often circulates on social media platforms, and other digital channels, targeting a diverse range of topics such as politics, health, religion, and social issues. Fake news can incite hatred, fuel communal tensions, manipulate public opinion, and even endanger lives in extreme cases. Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, Bangladesh has taken several initiatives to combat fake news. The Digital Security Act was enacted in 2018 to regulate online content, with provisions specifically targeting fake news and misinformation. In addition to legislative measures, civil society organizations and media outlets in Bangladesh have been actively raising awareness about fake news and promoting media literacy. Non-governmental organizations and fact-checking platforms have emerged to verify and debunking the myth of fake news demands more evaluation, discussion, dialogue, and policy. With this end, the paper evaluates the current initiatives and strategies employed by Bangladesh to combat the spread of fake news.
